UDOIT Guide

1 Getting Started

Opening UDOIT in Your Course

UDOIT is already enabled in your Canvas course. To begin:

  1. Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course.
  2. Locate the UDOIT link in the left-hand course navigation menu.
  3. Click the link to open the tool. It will automatically begin scanning your course content.

Note: Students will never see the UDOIT link in their navigation. It is visible only to teachers, TAs, and designers.

2 Scan & Dashboard

Accessing UDOIT Course Dashboard

The tool will automatically scan your course content upon opening. No manual start is required.

Once the scan finishes, look at the Home tab. You will see your Accessibility Score (your course's overall "grade").

3 Using UFIXIT to Fix Issues

The UFIXIT interface allows you to resolve errors without leaving the report page.

1. Review

Click the Review button on any error. This expands the item to show you the error in context (a preview of your page/content).

2. Remediate

Use the UFIXIT panel on the right.
Example: For missing alt text, simply type the description in the box provided and click Save. UDOIT updates the actual Canvas page instantly.

3. Mark as Resolved

If an issue is a "false positive" or you have fixed it manually, you can check the box to Mark as Resolved so it doesn't appear in future scans.

4 Common Errors & Solutions

Missing Alt Text

Images display a filename instead of a description.

Fix: Write a short, descriptive sentence (e.g., "Students working in the chemistry lab"). Mark as "Decorative" if it's just visual fluff.

Heading Structure

Skipping levels (H2 to H4) confuses screen readers.

Fix: Use UFIXIT's dropdown to reassign levels. Ensure hierarchy flows logically (H2 -> H3 -> H4).

Nondescript Links

Links labeled "click here" or raw URLs.

Fix: Rewrite the display text in UFIXIT to be descriptive (e.g., "Read the Syllabus").

Color Contrast

Light text on light background is hard to read.

Fix: UDOIT provides a color picker to darken the text until it meets WCAG AA standards.

5 Files & Converter

The File Review tab scans PDFs, Word docs, and PowerPoints. While UDOIT cannot open these files to fix them, it offers powerful management tools.

Remediating Files

  1. Click on the Review Course Files tab.
  2. Edit the file on your computer based on issues found.
  3. Click Request for a Tagged PDF if needed.
  4. Once fixed, click Replace file with auto-tagged PDF.
  5. Check the box for Marked as Reviewed.

PDF to Page Converter

PDFs are often difficult for mobile users. UDOIT can convert a PDF into a native Canvas Page.

  • Go to File Review tab.
  • Locate PDF and click Convert to Page.
  • Review and click Create Page.

6 Video Captioning (YuJa)

Accessible video is essential for an inclusive course. Use YuJa to auto-caption your content.

  1. Locate Media: Go to "Manage Media" in YuJa and hover over your video.
  2. Open Accessibility: Select "More..." from the menu, then click the Accessibility tab.
  3. Select Language: Choose your preferred language from the "Auto-Caption" dropdown menu.
  4. Send Request: Click "Send Caption Request" to process. Review captions for accuracy afterwards.

7 Final Check

  • Reassess Your Course:

Run a final scan to view your updated Accessibility Score.

  • Clean Up:

Ensure any outdated or remediated duplicate files are removed from the course.

  • Ready for Publication!

Your course is now more accessible and inclusive for all students.
